Within each printer range there are specific stock sizes. The width of the thermal transfer ribbon should be related to the size of label being used ( allowing for 2mm spare) ie. a 28mm wide label  printed 2 across requires a 60mm foil. Consideration should also be given to the presentation of the label ie. Wide edge leading (WEL) or Narrow edge leading (NEL). Most printer software programs can be changed so that the software prints the labels either horizontally or vertically. The throat of printer will also determine the maximum width of ribbon that can be used.

Within each printer range there are three specific types of ribbon. It is important to identify the application and material being used. The following shows the types of ribbons and there respective uses. Please note printer widths may vary according to the type of ribbon.
